The most important factor in planning this great room remodel was to open up the dividing wall between the kitchen and family room to create one large space, where family and friends can relax and the cook can be part of conversation.
The original family room had no visual connection to the kitchen and was used to store a rarely used pool table. We raised the ceilings and added reclaimed, decorative beams, as well as walnut flooring throughout to add detail and unify the spaces architecturally.
New built-ins and a fireplace were designed in the family room, using different door styles and finishes in all the cabinetry throughout the space, in order to keep the overall look more furniture-like and unique.
To combine the areas, a walk-in pantry dividing the family room and kitchen was removed and relocated to a narrow room adjacent to the family room. It was previously used as a wet bar servicing the family room through a pass through which was closed, and a furniture styled bar incorporated on that wall providing wine and beverage refrigerators and storage for liquor and bar accoutrement.
In the kitchen, cabinets were brought down to the counters flanking the sink to provide accessible storage from dishes and glasses for the petite wife. These wall cabinets terminated on the return sink walls leaving open space to make a design statement of a floating hood over the range top and the refrigerator with glass front.
Another important factor was to update all appliances and provide a comfortable and functional work space for an avid cook who wanted to practice culinary arts learnt in Tuscany. The appliances were reconfigured and the island designed with a prep-sink and small glass dishwasher, warmer drawer, and microwave. This allows someone else to assist in food preparations without hindering the main cook.
The clients are delighted with the result and share more time together now that the space is one great room.
