San Diego and beyond

The original 1953 kitchen had insufficient counter and storage space, old appliances, and poor lighting. The laundry stepped down into the garage, and the adjacent family room was outmoded with dark paneling.
First, the old paneling was removed and a new passageway created from the dining room, so that the existing bar seating concept between kitchen and family room could be extended to accommodate four bar stools, while creating more counter space and storage on the kitchen side. The ample kitchen width allowed for six-inch deep ledges, a convenience feature also adding to overall counter space. Highlights include an elongated fixed pane window beneath the wall cabinets to introduce daylighting and views into a garden area. A mirror panel was added at the cooking alcove backsplash to further emphasize that feature.
By adding a new laundry and pantry on the same level, that area became an extension of the kitchen, with prep area, sink, and 18” dishwasher, plus energy-saving washer and dryer and a rotating drop-down ironing board.
New hardwood flooring throughout complements the kitchen cabinetry. In the main kitchen area, the flooring is laid diagonally, introducing an interesting rhythm. Additional materials are marble counters with mosaic backsplashes and honed black granite at the rangetop ledges and bar seating. Layered lighting adds to a graceful ambiance. |
