This remodel contains numerous thought-filled design elements that maximize functionality, carried out with a style designed to appeal to its target markets of young professionals and empty nesters. The apex of success with this effort is the second bedroom space. Originally simply a 121 square foot niche off the open living area, added elements such as sliding shoji-screen-style doors, built-in cabinetry and a Murphy bed give the space three functions: comfortable guest room, home office with two generous work stations, and an additional cozy conversation area when entertaining.
The sliding doors are designed to open the niche completely and the wood floors continue from the normal living space without a pause, building a natural continuity with the rest of the condominium. When closed, the Murph7y bed’s frame looks like fine cabinetry, with only the handle hinting of its purpose. The bed positioned requires minimal furniture shifting to open for sleeping.
Dark wood cabinets on each side of the bed provide additional storage and further contribute to the impression that the bed is part of a wall of cabinets rather than the bulky intrusion that Murphy beds often register.
The built-in work space and matching cabinets set along the right side provide a comfortable and functional office/den space, within a backsplash of multicolored glass time that brightens the dark wood and enlivens the effort of the total room design.
When closed, the translucent doors and space above the transom allow light into the space while providing privacy as desired for work-at-home projects or tied guests. When open the room adds both luster and sense of space to the main living area. This is the best of conscious design – merging small-footprint function with beauty. |
